Description
This course is intended for everyone who wishes to get to know the world of medicinal leeches better and to learn how to use them safely and responsibly for their own needs and the needs of their loved ones.
Medicinal leeches have accompanied humankind for thousands of years and have a rich history of use across various cultures. The aim of the course is to offer participants quality theoretical knowledge as well as practical guidance for handling leeches correctly.
The course lasts approximately five hours and can be conducted in Slovenian, English, and Croatian, Serbian, or Bosnian.
Course content
During the course we become familiar with:
- the history of hirudotherapy,
- the biology and anatomy of medicinal leeches,
- the correct handling and care of leeches,
- the basic techniques of applying leeches,
- the bioactive substances in leech saliva,
- the fundamental principles of how hirudotherapy works,
- notable research and authors in the field of hirudotherapy,
- different approaches and methods of using leeches,
- selecting the appropriate number of leeches,
- indications, limitations, and contraindications,
- the aftercare of the bite site following therapy,
- the body's usual responses after therapy and how to monitor them.
How it is conducted
The courses take place individually or in small groups, which allows for a tailored approach and ample room for questions and practical demonstrations.
The content is adapted as needed to the prior knowledge, interests, and goals of each individual participant.
Since learning is a process that continues even after the course has ended, participants have access to further support with any questions and dilemmas that may arise during later practice or in applying the knowledge they have gained.
