Leeches in veterinary medicine

The use of leeches is not limited to humans alone. Hirudotherapy also has a tradition in veterinary practice, where it is used primarily as a complementary approach to various animal ailments.

In the professional literature and in veterinary practice, leeches are mentioned in connection with supporting recovery after certain surgical procedures, with problems affecting tissue circulation, and with some chronic conditions of the musculoskeletal system. Their use has a particularly long tradition in horses, where leech therapy is still practised in many countries today.

The experience of veterinarians and therapists suggests that many animals tolerate the therapy well. They often calm down during the procedure and allow the leeches to do their work with minimal intervention.

In animals, a brief period of bleeding at the bite site is normal after the therapy, and its duration depends on the species of animal and the site of application.

In various cultures we also find interesting folk observations, according to which certain animals in the wild are said to seek out areas where leeches live of their own accord. Such stories bear witness to the long-standing connection between humans, animals, and this unusual yet remarkably fascinating creature.

Important: Leech therapy in animals should only be carried out with appropriate knowledge and in accordance with veterinary recommendations and any possible contraindications.
